In our sermon today we reflect on a quality that is often misunderstood in our society—that of gentleness. Our world often equates gentleness with weakness and cowardice. As followers of Christ, we are called to view gentleness through a different lens.
The Bible makes it clear that gentleness is a clear marker of those who belong to the Kingdom of God. Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, embodied this virtue perfectly. He was humble and meek, yet he did not hesitate to demonstrate his power and authority at the right time.
Jesus did not retaliate when faced with persecution, suffering, and the agony of the cross. Yet, this same gentle Savior demonstrated formidable power and authority when He cleansed the temple with a whip, driving out those who defiled His Father’s house.
Through these actions, Jesus shows us that true gentleness is indeed power under control. It is having the strength to act, paired with the wisdom to know when restraint and love must prevail.
Let us seek to emulate Christ’s example—displaying kindness, humility, and meekness, while also standing firm against the forces that would compromise our integrity and our faith. Let us learn how true power is exercised in gentleness.
