Ash Wednesday is the first day of the Season of Lent. The reason we observe Ash Wednesday is to focus on prayer and repentance during the upcoming Season of Lent. In ancient times, ashes were used to express grief or sorrow for sin. Ashes symbolize the old, sinful self dying and returning to dust. Today ashes placed on the forehead or hand are an external expression of repentance.
